![]() ![]() Great car, until it inexplicably burst into flames at the side of the road. I did use to drive a Vauxhall Victor a few years ago, and that did have the old ratchet brake under the steering column. Lots of cars now have an electronic handbrake, so that's just even easier. I'm a professional driver in my day job and all the cars I drive with a handbrake, I always push the button in. My driving instructor explicitly forbade it during lessons and so I've never pushed the button in when pulling up the handbrake. ![]() The hill assist does work though, so that's a bonus.Īs for pulling up the handbrake on the ratchet, never done it in the 30 odd years since I passed my test. We also have a very steep hill just down the bottom of the road where we live and I can pull up the handbrake and it doesn't hold the car particulary well at all, so the foot remains on the foot brake. We have a very slight gradient on our own drive, but not enough to trouble the handbrake holding the car. I have to admit, I have actually managed to push our little i10 forward with the handbrake fully on. You may consider yourself lucky that your car was stopped with little damage caused. I recently had an Audi roll down the hill outside my house and if my Astra had not stopped it (written Off as a result) I dread to think - children play in our cull de sac further down the hill, it could have gathered enough speed to go through the front of someones house. I would suggest that as a further safety measure the H/brake alarm and light should activate if the car is not in gear with the handbrake also on. It is just good practice to park with the car in gear that's how my father taught me to drive, belt and braces some night say but less tears in the end. It is my view that rear discs do not make good parking brakes and are not to be relied on.ĭrum rear brakes are much better and even on my slope have held the car fast, but I have always parked with the car in gear just in case the H/brake cable snaps. I found the same with my previous i10, I always park with the car in first gear. I park on a steep slope and the H/brake has never been secure. I have always found the i10 handbrake next to useless (like other cars with rear discs) and I don't think it should be called a parking brake. ![]()
